Potterton goes back to school
In two separate refurbishment projects, carried out over the summer break in successive years, Potterton Commercial has supplied a total of seven Eurocondense two condensing boilers to provide space heating in a number of areas at Stantonbury Campus in Milton Keynes.
Built in the seventies and one of the UK’s largest schools, Stantonbury Campus is a foundation comprehensive, specialising in arts, maths, computing and applied learning, providing education for 2,600 students aged 11-18 in five separate halls. On-site facilities also include an adult and continuing education centre, as well as a leisure centre, theatre and gallery displaying students’ work, all open to the public.
In phase 1, blocks 4, 5, 6 and 15 were refurbished and these works included reception and the theatre. Phase 2 saw the upgrading of blocks 9 and 10 which are academic areas.
The Potterton Commercial Eurocondense two boilers were selected by Architecture MK. Barry Hickmott, Engineer of Architecture MK, commented: “We standardised on Potterton Commercial boilers as we found them to be completely reliable, manoeuvrable and, with compact dimensions, easy to locate in plantrooms with difficult access.”
Major upgrade
In phase I, the three linked buildings are served by three Eurocondense two 200 kW boilers serving the LPHW radiator heating system. Phase 2 incorporates four Eurocondense two 250kW boilers along with plate heat exchangers in several areas where they protect the existing pipework and radiators from the higher operating pressures of the new boilers. All the boilers were installed by T Clarke East Ltd (Formally Aylward EMS) as part of the two major refurbishment projects which, in addition to upgrading the LPHW heating systems, also incorporated ventilation, air conditioning, domestic hot and cold water services, LV distribution systems, lighting and small power systems.
Eurocondense boilers are extremely compact, so that they fit through a standard 600mm doorway. These modular, floor standing, condensing boilers embody the latest developments in heating technology, achieving seasonal energy efficiency of up to 94% gross as well as ultra-low NOX levels, exceeding Class 5. The range features pre-mix, fully modulating control for complete heating flexibility and a lifetime guarantee on the aluminium/silicon alloy heat exchanger.
The advanced, ISR control system has volt-free contacts for BEMS interface and features a user-friendly control panel with full text display of operational status which avoids the inconvenience of checking codes or lights. Also incorporated is inbuilt weather compensation, summer/winter changeover and time control facilities. The ISR controls may be used with a simple room thermostat or, as in this installation, with a fully integrated Building Energy Management System.
The latest, redesigned Eurocondense three range incorporates all these facilities and more. It has one of the smallest footprints of any gas-fired condensing boiler on the UK market for the kW rated output, space-saving top mounted hydraulic electrical and flue connections and achieves a net efficiency of 107%.
