Liverpool win the double at Building Performance Awards
Waterman Building Services, the company behind Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre, scooped two prizes, including the coveted Building Performance Champion Award, at the 2016 CIBSE Building Performance Awards, organised by Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.
As well as taking home the top prize, the team were also victorious in the new Project of the Year – Leisure category, which recognises high levels of user satisfaction and comfort whilst delivering outstanding measured building performance in a new or refurbished building.
The judges were impressed at the technical skill displayed in maintaining comfort in a challenging environment with exacting acoustic requirements. Demonstrating the ability to dissipate over 115kW of internal gains while maintaining internal air quality, limiting noise from the busy city-centre environment and minimising noise within the theatre, Waterman Building Services were announced as the winners at the best attended Building Performance Awards Dinner ever.
Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre was completely re-built and re-opened in 2014, replacing the much-renovated 1837 building originally opened as a Dissenter’s chapel. The new theatre was praised for its sympathetic design as a much-loved community fixture, and for its sustainability credentials, having re-used 90% of the previous structure’s material.
In the opinion of the judges, Waterman Building Services demonstrated the most outstanding contribution and commitment to achieving improved building performance. They follow in the footsteps of M&G Real Estate, crowned Carbon Champion last year for its long-term commitment to improving building performance driven by responsible investment strategy.
Coming into the awards as the 2014 Stirling Prize winner, the theatre already had awards pedigree, and as well as the Project of the Year – Leisure category they were also named overall Building Performance Champion, the first time that a Stirling Prize Winner has also done the double at the CIBSE Building Performance Awards.
This year’s Building Performance Awards mark a year of change for the event, after five new categories were introduced: Project of the Year – Commercial/Industrial, Project of the Year – Leisure, Project of the Year – Public, Project of the Year – Residential and Project of the Year – Retail. These were introduced to reflect the level of diversity in the entries the judges have received, and to better recognise individual achievement.
Building performance solutions
Nick Mead, President of CIBSE, said “The Building Performance Awards are one of the high points of any CIBSE President’s term, and I’m honoured to have been able to witness such a tightly fought contest. This is the largest field we’ve ever had, which I think is testament to the diverse range of building performance solutions our industry has been able to implement.
“For me the most important thing about these awards is that they reward real and measured building performance, not promises and plans, which shows us who is making a real difference in fighting climate change. I’d like to congratulate our Building Performance Champions, Waterman Building Services, who have been able to carry on the excellent work of the Everyman’s award winning design, and make the building a champion in operation too.”
Other high-achievers on the night included Beverley Clifton Morris (BCM), who were once again named best Building Services Consultancy under 100 employees. They are the only company to have won this award three years in a row.
