Zumtobel Lighting has supplied luminaires for Kintore Midmill Primary School. Using seven different types of luminaire, Zumtobel has provided the lighting throughout the £11.5 million project. The new school will increase and improve on the existing facilities in the town as part of Aberdeenshire  Council’s capital plan. The brief was to create the perfect environment for the pupils and staff whilst achieving a low maintenance, energy efficient solution.

The project is a new build 100m x 100m U shaped school building, comprising a split level glulam framed design taking into account the flow, movement and use of the spaces. The school has 19 teaching areas split into four zones with which allow breakout space for each class. In addition, there is a large hall, dining area, library, music and drama room and community room. The two group room areas allow for flexible learning to take place with additional support for learning needs.

Zumtobel’s Ecoos luminaires were chosen for the classrooms to provide all-round 360 degree light using just one light source. The MPO+ micro-pyramidal optic and perforated lateral reflectors make the luminaire sparkle like crystal, giving ECOOS a brilliant look which enhances both workspaces and transit areas. 36 Ondaria decorative, round luminaires in two sizes have also been used in the breakout corridor to provide a gentle lighting effect with a harmonious design. Uniformly illuminated, it hides the contours of the lamps from view. A discreet indirect component for ceiling illumination underlines the three dimensional effect of the luminaire.

CAELA, a modular lighting system with Edge-LIT LED technology, has been used on the Central feature stairs and in the double height entrance area. The CAELA family comprises wall, ceiling and pendant luminaires and, due to a very intelligent configuration of the components, the luminaire has a maximum depth of 55mm and a frameless, clear and elegant design that leaves maximum space for the emitting surface. The square version was chosen for the stairs and the round option for the entrance.  Zumtobel’s Slotlight Infinity LED was chosen for general area illumination as it creates an excellent, continuous flow of uniform light with no shadows to complement the unique design of the space.

Zumtobel’s CLEAN LED luminaires have provided the perfect solution for the kitchen where optimum hygiene standards are imperative.  In addition to a PMMA acrylic glass panel with a high-quality, anodised aluminium frame that ensures a high level of shatter protection, its microprismatic optic delivers high efficiency and standards-compliant glare-control. Tough RAS, ball proof, surface mounted luminaires with bivergent reflector optics made of highly specular anodised pure aluminum were chosen for the sports hall for direct light distribution.

Mellow Light IV in the offices provides a soft illumination similar to daylight using new, innovative prismatic optics. The operating efficiency of Mellow Light IV makes this system perfect for the illumination of low-energy buildings. Zumtobel’s round, recessed Panos LED downlights are providing the illumination in the toilets, while low maintenance, high ingress protection Perluce has been installed in the stores for a fit-for-purpose lighting solution. Lastly, for the plant room CHIARO, an IP 65 rated linear diffuser luminaire with an impact-resistant polycarbonate housing, has been utilised for its durable and efficient properties.

AECOM oversaw the lighting project from the initial concept stage, luminaire specification and final commissioning of all of the fittings used on the project and provided the required low maintenance, energy efficient solution.
