Travelodge opts for heat pumps
Dimplex air source heat pumps have been installed in a new hotel to help meet Building Regulations and Merton Rule criteria.
The new £2.6 million Travelodge with 53 bedrooms is the first in the Wiltshire town of Devizes for 200 years and has three Dimplex LA 28 AS air source heat pumps to pre-heat domestic hot water for the hotel.
Andy Brown, Technical Director for Micro-Generation Systems, says: “Air source heat pumps were the obvious way to go, as solar would have not been suitable for the design of the new hotel and ground source for a building of this size wasn’t cost effective.
“We were able to work through all the options with Travelodge and then talk with the planners to show how the Dimplex air source heat pumps would help achieve the percentage of renewable energy required to meet the Merton Rule and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.”
The LA 28 AS heat pumps installed at Travelodge Devizes are freestanding units for outdoor installation with a flow temperature up to 55ºC. The model has a powder-coated metal casing to withstand the British climate, making it ideal for specification where internal space is limited.
The LA AS range includes six models with nominal heating capacities of 11 – 16 kW single phase and 20 – 40kW three phase units. The three phase models are fitted with twin compressors for higher capacity output and a choice of two performance capacities, giving a variable heating water flow temperature from 35 to 55ºC, with weather compensation.
The air source heat pumps are normally designed to deliver 100% of the heating and hot water demand, and with retrofit applications it is also possible to combine the heat pump with an existing boiler. The LA AS unit, which has an air deflector hood to minimise noise, is suitable for use with underfloor heating or a radiator system and to provide domestic hot water.
A defrost cycle on the heat pumps minimises energy consumption while models with two compressors (20kW and more) such as those used at Devizes, incorporate intelligent load switching to maximise compressor life.
