The City of London is the historic centre of the capital, as well as the international hub for financial services, including insurance, commodities trading and investment. On a prime corner of the ‘Square Mile’, a striking new 40-storey office tower has risen from 100 Bishopsgate and, at the heart of the 900,000 sqft building, lies six TRIGON® XXL EVO boilers from ELCO Heating Solutions.

The six commercial boilers, which each have an output of 1.7 MW, are providing efficient heating and hot water to all 36 office floors and are housed on a purposely designed rooftop plantroom. The location also lent itself well to the boilers’ lightweight modular construction and low water content. The units were transported to the rooftop plant room using a crane and, once operational, their low water content kept the overall weight to a minimum, removing the need for any additional reinforcing of the floor.

The owners of the tower, Brookfield Properties, targeted the highest standards of energy efficiency, productivity and comfort for its occupiers. As a result, environmentally conscious systems and materials have been included within the building’s design to maximise sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint over its lifetime. It has also been designed to deliver a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Central to these targets was employing a heating and hot water system that utilised the latest high efficiency technology and offered extremely low NOx emissions. These were key factors in the specification of ELCO’s TRIGON® XXL EVO boilers, which have gross efficiencies of up to 95.9% and ultra-low NOx emissions of just 20 mg/kWh (Gross Calorific Value) – providing extremely cost-effective running costs and maximum BREEAM points.

The TRIGON® XXL EVO boilers also provided superb performance in a compact space, with the ability to deliver the required output from standalone premix condensing units, as Regional Sales Agent, Dale Melton explained: “The initial specification called for steel shell and tube boilers, which would have needed costly externally mounted equipment such as a pressure jet burner, a burner acoustic shroud and a separate condensing economiser. Instead, our class leading pre-mix boiler solution negated these requirements, allowing savings to be made on the capital cost of the equipment purchased.

“Furthermore, by collaborating closely with M&E contractors Michael J Lonsdale, as well as project consultants at the London office of Hilson Moran, we implemented design changes to the primary hydraulic circuit, which helped make considerable savings on the installation costs.”

TRIGON® XXL’s low NOx emissions are achieved by utilising a unique heat exchanger geometry and a water-cooled cold flame burner. This is combined with an optimised combustion system, plus a stainless steel heat exchanger, to provide a reliable and robust lifetime performance.

Another major benefit of the TRIGON® XXL is its low water content design, which ensures it can respond rapidly to today’s complex heating systems, which often combine multiple heat sources. This design also means the boiler has a small footprint and lightweight construction, allowing it to be utilised in a wide range of commercial applications.

The TRIGON® XXL is available in ‘ECO’ and ‘EVO’ variants, which combine to offer 19 different models.
