KNX plays a blinder

KNX UK Association member Better Blind Company has completed the manufacture and installation of around 400 automated cassette roller blinds, now installed within the 69 luxury residential apartments at the prestigious mixed Central St. Giles development in Central London.

Supplied to main contractor, United House, the automated blinds utilise Sonesse 50 ILT motors and KNX gateways from Somfy, another member of KNX UK. The motorised blinds operate extremely quietly and offer precision control to the user as well as a uniform appearance by a guaranteed alignment on a virtually unlimited number of intermediate positions.

The blinds are mostly installed in bedrooms, with two blinds per window, one behind the other – one uses a white screen fabric and the other, a beige blackout fabric. Each blind is housed within a white powder coated cassette and installed behind a specially created pelmet.  Some of the blinds are up to 3.4 metres wide and Better Blind Company sourced extra wide fabrics to allow them to be made without joins, improving the aesthetic appearance.

A critical part of the solution was the motor control provided by Somfy’s KNX range of products.  Reality Logic was responsible for commissioning the system consisting of several hundreds of KNX-ILT motor controllers discreetly installed throughout the apartments.  This logistically very challenging project was completed under tight time constraints and all the blinds are integrated with a KNX smart home automation system.
